Introducing Groupon Payments

In the past, our merchant partners have often told us that their traditional payment systems are expensive and cumbersome–so we stepped up to the plate and developed our own payments service guaranteed to be the simplest and lowest cost option for Groupon merchants to accept credit cards. Today we’re announcing the launch of Groupon Payments, the latest addition to our extensive suite of merchant products and services.

After a successful pilot in the San Francisco Bay area, Groupon Payments is now available to all Groupon merchants in the U.S.! Built into the latest version of the Groupon Merchants app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, Groupon Payments facilitates credit card transactions for any Groupon merchant. And since the service is already built into the app, existing Groupon merchants can enroll quickly and smoothly.

Groupon Payments is perfect for any business whether it’s a spa, deli, bar, salon or restaurant. In addition to slashing transaction fees, Groupon Payments offers services that most of the traditional processors don’t. Rather than waiting the typical two or three days for credit card payments to hit an account, Groupon Payments users get paid overnight. It’s never been easier to calculate bill totals, process refunds, redeem Groupon vouchers, email receipts and most importantly, save money!

With the online Groupon Payments Center, business owners can view a live transaction history, check daily sales reports, track deposits to an account and analyze revenue trends. Groupon provides a sturdy audio jack card-swiping device free of charge – merchants can opt for a high-volume case-based reader if they need it. Plus, if there is ever a need to reach us, we’ve put together a dedicated Groupon Payments support team available by phone and email 7-days a week to answer any and all questions.

Groupon Welcomes Breadcrumb

We are excited to announce that Groupon has acquired Breadcrumb! The team behind Breadcrumb shares our passion to build affordable and intuitive products that make it easier for local merchants to manage their business. We’re thrilled to welcome founder Seth Harris and his team to the Groupon family – Seth boasts more than 12 years of hospitality management experience, making him uniquely empathetic to the tight budgets and unique needs of business owners in the food and beverage industry who often struggle to find technology products that will work perfectly for them.

Breadcrumb will continue to serve new and existing clients and we look forward to offering their product to our existing merchant partners. Also, for Groupon merchant partners that use Breadcrumb’s point of sale system, we’ll be able to significantly improve the process of redeeming a Groupon.

Announcing Groupon Rewards

Today we’ve announced Groupon Rewards, a new program allowing consumers to unlock special Groupon deals from their favorite local businesses through repeat visits. Consumers earn rewards at participating merchants simply by paying with the credit or debit card they have on file at Groupon.com. After spending an amount set by the merchant, the consumer unlocks the ability to purchase a special Groupon for that business.

What’s exciting about Rewards is how easy it is for both merchants and consumers. As a shopper, you don’t have to worry about a loyalty card or remembering to check in – we do all the work behind the scenes. And as a merchant, Rewards works with your existing POS system to help you track redemption and ROI while incentivizing future purchases. Pretty cool stuff.

Merchant response in our test markets has been great so far. Here’s what we heard from Derek Miller, Director of Digital Marketing for Lifeway Foods, the parent company of Starfruit Café, which has five locations in Chicago and is participating in the pilot program:

Mobile redemption tracking apps available for download

We are excited to announce that our mobile redemption tracking apps are now available for download from Apple’s App Store or the Android Marketplace. Our goal was to make it dead simple for merchants to redeem and track Groupons. If you are already a Groupon merchant, simply download one of the mobile apps, sign-in with your merchant credentials and your master list of Groupons will be downloaded to your mobile phone.

Once the Groupons are downloaded to your phone, all you have to do is scan the barcode on each Groupon that a customer brings in, with your phone’s camera. The app will log the Groupon as redeemed and automatically update our online database. You can also use the app to track additional information such as the total amount each customer spent.

If you don’t have an iPhone, iPod Touch or Android phone you can talk to your Groupon representative about leasing one. You can get more information about redemption on Grouponworks. Give the apps a try and let us know how we can improve them.

Groupon Android App Now Available

A few weeks ago when we launched a revamped version of our iPhone app, we got a ton of requests for an Android app. We are happy to announce that the Groupon Android app is now available for download in Android Market for phones running 1.6 and up.  You can buy deals, access your purchased Groupons and find the ones that are nearby.

You can also redeem deals from the app and view side deals by selecting the “More Deals” option in the deal page menu.

We are working on adding features such as the ability to browse Discussions forums and a widget to the app.  We would like to get your input- post your comments on what you want to see next.

Groupon Mobile

About a month ago we announced the acquisition of mob.ly, to super charge our efforts to make it really easy for you to buy Groupons and take them with you on any mobile phone.

Starting today you can download a revamped version of our iPhone app.  We have made it faster, eliminated the crashes that some of you have been reporting and setup a foundation that will allow us to add new features quickly.  Also by popular demand, you can now view side/nearby deals from the “More” button on the deal page and use your Groupons when offline.

We are working on adding tons of new features to the iPhone app- everything from the ability to purchase Groupon’s as gifts, to using your G’s and browsing discussion forums.  We would love your input- post your comments on what you would like to see.  For you non-iPhone users- we have some great stuff in the works- so stay tuned!
