Meet a Groupon Employee

Though Groupon culture is best witnessed in person, preferably via moving walkway or tramcar, we’ve asked a few of our eclectic, hard working employees to answer a few questions about what makes them tick.

Name: Lindsay Verstegen

Position: HR/Recruiter

Other Talents: I have a theatre company that I helped found over 4 years ago: The Plagiarists. I write and act for the company (and also take production photos here and there).

I finished performances of a semi-opera which ran over at The Building Stage. The Building Stage, for the record, is my favorite “storefront space” in Chicago. There was singing. There was dancing. It was really special.

I also take photos!  www.lindzsays.com

What’s a typical day like for you?

I come in around 8ish and check e-mail and voicemail and open up my notebook. Despite working for a dotcom, I cannot separate from paper. (note: My high school’s mascot was the “Papermaker” so maybe it’s a hometown pride thing, subconsciously.)
I have a to-do list that I craft the night before and see if there is anything that can be done right away. I go through days with an assortment of interviews, phone screens and general resume lookovers. I also try to find time to go on a walk–I think walking is important.

Which movie villain could you beat in a fight?

Gordon Gekko in the movie Wall Street. I would kill him with kindness.

What have you learned since working here?

It overwhelms me to think about writing out all the things I’ve learned! This place moves fast and the learning is constant. I dig it.

Which non-Chicago landmark do you wish was in Chicago?

Simon’s cheese factory in Little Chute Wisconsin.

What’s been a memorable experience so far with this company?

My most memorable experience is when I was at my desk, working very hard, and my co-worker Wes came over to me and said, “Do you have a minute?”
He proceeded to walk me around the office while talking to me about a conflict in Nigeria or something. We were walking and talking fast and other people from Customer Service were coming up to us and requesting his signature on a piece of paper and talking about the president here and there as we walked.
I was giggling so hard because what Wes had executed was “West Winging.” Anyone familiar with this show (one of the greatest shows on television, by the way) knows that this sort of purposeful walking and talking is a trademark of the show and Wes found a way to bring that business to my normal working day. It was epic.
I WENT “WEST WINGING” AT GROUPON.

What should people know about Groupon?

Oh man, I get asked this question a lot as a recruiter and I can’t help but feel like it’s a cliche…
but it’s true…
we work hard and we play hard. We all take our jobs really seriously but no one takes themselves too seriously.

They also should know that we sit really close to each other here. Intimacy is constant.

How high can you jump and why?

I can jump a couple of inches. I’m the weakest link in the “let’s everybody jump” photos but, to my credit, those photos aren’t my bag anyway.

Before Groupon, what was the best job you had and why?

I worked as a singer/dancer at Playland Park in Rye, NY for a summer during college. I was paid to sing and dance to songs ranging from retro tunes (Fame, the Laverne and Shirley theme song, etc.) to pop songs of the era (J.Lo, Backstreet Boys, etc.). I lived in a mansion and sang and danced in five shows a day.  It was the coolest/weirdest time of my life.  I had more than one “costume malfunction” which made things interesting.

What do you like about working here?
I like the energy. I feel like we’re making something really great in the work we do everyday. I love that we, as a company, don’t underestimate anyone’s intellect–from the subscribers who get the deals everyday to the people who work here.  We don’t talk down to people and I like that.

Which zoo animal are you least similar to?

Eagle, dude. Eagle.

  • The ever brilliant and hilarious (and pretty) Lindsay Verstegen. I second the comment about Simon’s Cheese Factory.

  • Nice to meet the beautiful Lindsay Verstegen. Very impressed how you would defeat Gordon Gekko:)!
