Groupon Celebrates Presidents Day by Honoring Alexander Hamilton

Commemorate a man historically powerful enough to be on money with $10 towards $40 on a local purchase

Starting tomorrow, Groupon will be kicking off Presidents Day weekend by giving customers 10 dollars off 40 dollars when they purchase a deal for any local business. The $10 bill, as everyone knows, features President Alexander Hamilton — undeniably one of our greatest presidents and most widely recognized for establishing the country’s financial system.

Beginning Saturday, Feb. 15 at 9 am CST, shoppers will be able to redeem this offer by using the promo code “10OFF40LOCAL”, which isn’t very catchy, but neither was President Hamilton’s famous saying, “nobody expects to trust his body overmuch after the age of fifty.”

President Hamilton is best known for the fiscal sensibilities that led him to author economic policies, establish a national bank and control taxes. Most Romantic Cities in America

Screen shot 2014-02-14 at 12.11.29 AMHow do you express your love? Flowers, chocolate, handmade “Casablanca” dioramas? To find out what makes our customers’ hearts go pitter-patter, we dug into our sales data to learn about the best cities for Valentine’s Day gifting.

Where are the most sales per U.S. Groupon subscriber for chocolate? Denver, of course. Michigan boasts the second and third most chocolate sales with Grand Rapids and Detroit respectively. Top cities for flower sales? Napa, Calif. Chicago comes in second. We Chicagoans love flowers.

What do people typically gift on Valentine’s Day? Candy, flowers, jewelry, lingerie and spa treatments. People also go out to restaurants and some even take a romantic trip or stay at a cozy bed and breakfast. Groupon took a look at its own sales to see which cities lead some of the most popular Valentine’s Day gifting categories and more.

And the most romantic cities are . . .

MIAMI — Miami leads the pack as the city with the most people who buy watches, gold jewelry and cubic zirconia. Miami also is the number 3 city for diamond jewelry sales per Groupon subscriber and the number 4 city for flower sales.

NEW YORK — New York is the leader in diamond jewelry sales per Groupon subscriber. New York is also the 3rd biggest city for sales of French restaurant deals and watches sales.  New York is the number 4 city for sales of gold jewelry.

NAPA — Napa, Calif. is the leader in both flower sales per Groupon subscriber and sales of bed and breakfast deals.

AUSTIN –  Austin, Texas is number 1 in boudoir photo shoot sales per Groupon subscriber. Austin is followed by San Diego at number 2 and Tulsa at number 3.

AMARILLO — Amarillo, Texas is number 1 in lingerie sales per Groupon subscriber. Take a four-hour drive south to Abilene, Texas and you’ll find the third most lingerie sales per Groupon subscriber.

SACRAMENTO — Sacramento, Calif. area Groupon subscribers purchase the most spa deals. Dallas comes in second, followed by Hampton Roads, Va.

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte, N.C. is number 1 in massage sales per Groupon subscriber.

DON’T Do This for Valentine’s Day

Screen shot 2014-02-14 at 12.40.08 AMSome want to know who wrote the book of love. Others want to know what’s in the middle of every chocolate candy because they want to avoid the coconut one. Well, we wanted to know the Dos and Don’ts of Valentine’s Day. So we conducted a study.

The study–among Groupon subscribers in the United States and 11 additional countries– revealed a wealth of interesting results, but here’s what you need to know:  DON’T GIVE YOUR VALENTINE CHEAP CANDY (or if you do, at least wrap it in money). Also, don’t use social media to express your undying love. And if you live in Germany, don’t buy your valentine something flashy.

The Valentine’s Day gifting study was conducted to better prepare Groupon’s offerings on its Valentine’s Day Shop. In addition to the U.S.-based research, studies were conducted in 11 different regions across the globe, revealing a few interesting similarities. “Cheap candy,” for example, is definitely a universal DON’T on Valentine’s Day.

If you’re planning to give a gift on Valentine’s Day, you’re not alone:  over half of respondents in the U.S. (58 percent) said they’re going to give a gift.  But almost no one gives Valentine’s Day gifts to co-workers (2 percent), gifting a spouse (62%) is a far more popular idea. Only 3 percent of respondents say they give a Valentine’s Day gift to the family pet, so we’re going to put that one in the “Don’t” column, too. It should go without saying but please don’t read this press release aloud to pets.


When buying a gift for Valentine’s Day this year, don’t spend less than $10 on a gift. If you do that, it won’t be easy to find someone to confide in when that doesn’t go over well because only 3 percent of respondents spend less than $10. And don’t buy your gifts over the phone. Or through a catalogue. Only 2 percent and 3 percent respectively purchase Valentine’s Day gifts that way. It’s the age of the Internet. Let’s not pretend otherwise.


When giving a Valentine’s Day gift, you better put some thought and meaning into it. Eighty-five percent of respondents said the gift meaning is very important. Only 2 percent of people said that the meaning is not important. And 73 percent of respondents said that the gift has to show the giver really understands them and knows what they like.


Don’t use social media to send your love to your valentine. A majority of respondents said they will not be doing that (60 percent). And 33 percent of respondents said that if they received a Valentine’s Day message solely via social media, they would NOT be impressed (most popular response). If you decide to use social media for your valentine, DO include a photo (most using social media plan to), but DON’T included an intimate body shot or image of a romantic location (less than 10 percent of respondents plan to include those images).  Just because you can do something, that doesn’t mean you should.


If you live in Japan or Poland, or have a valentine in one of those countries, plan on giving a gift. Over half of respondents in those countries say they plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a gift. If your valentine is in Australia, Malaysia or the United Kingdom, don’t get cheap candy; 42 percent, 41 percent and 37 percent (respectively) of respondents say they don’t want it. If you already bought some cheap candy, teach yourself a lesson by eating all of it, alone, in a dark room. And if your valentine is in Germany, Spain or The Netherlands, don’t get something flashy; more than half of respondents in each of those countries don’t want that.

Also, if your valentine is in Hong Kong, plan on spending no less than $136. Hong Kong was the big spender of all the countries surveyed. In Australia the average spend on Valentine’s Day gifts is $66.  In France and Spain, people spend between $33 and $66. In Japan, people spend $46. In Donstania, a made-up country, no one spends anything. It’s made-up.

Valentine’s Day is a time to express your love to your sweetheart, so DO remember to check Groupon.com for some last-minute gifts that will make you both feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Investigating Groupon’s Effect on Local Communities

Love LocalAt Groupon, we love small, local businesses, and we make it our goal to support them as part of our business model. Our hope is that connecting consumers with local merchants in their own neighborhoods benefits local communities and economies, but we couldn’t be sure until we did some more digging.

To begin to answer these questions, the Social Innovation team at Groupon undertook two research projects this past fall:

  1. The first was to determine whether a dollar spent at Groupon on an independent business generated more economic activity than a dollar spent at a chain business directly.

  2. The second question was how does Groupon shift consumer behaviors.

The clear answer to question #1 was…yes! During a 12 week period in Q3, 2013 in three markets (Chicago, Atlanta, St. Louis), Groupon created 48 jobs and $4 million in economic activity that would not have existed had the money spent at Groupon been spent directly at chains.

While that result alone might seem to answer the larger question—does Groupon positively impact entire communities—we still needed more information to draw a conclusion.  The reason is, while spending a dollar at Groupon is better for the local economy than spending it directly at a chain, it is still not as good for that local community as spending it directly at a local, independently owned merchant.

So then we needed to answer the following question: Is Groupon changing consumer behavior in such a way that dollars that would have been spent at chains are now spent at independent merchants via Groupon? To begin to answer that bigger question, we asked our Groupon consumers how they feel about local and independent businesses and how they use Groupon to discover them.

What the Social Innovation team found while working with Groupon’s Market Research team was that approximately ⅓ of Groupon consumers believe that supporting local independent businesses is important and that 50% of Groupon’s consumers use Groupon to discover local businesses.

More research needs to be done to empirically prove that Groupon positively affects local communities, but it is clear from our initial research that Groupon plays a role in supporting the local business community—something we are proud of!

Recap of Groupon’s Commitment to STEM Education in 2013

Whit House Tech Inclusion Summit 2013You’ve heard of Reading, Writing, and ‘Rithmetic, but what about STEM? In January 2013, representatives from Groupon, including Jeff Holden, SVP of Product Development, Patty Morrissey, Head of Social Innovation, and Nadia Rawlinson, Head of Talent Development, attended the White House Teach Inclusion Summit led by the White House CTO, Todd Park. The summit’s focus was bridging the gap for women and minorities in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields. Groupon was in attendance with Citizen Schools, a nonprofit that incubated one of the key initiatives, US2020.  The initiative has a goal of matching 1 million STEM professionals to mentor students at youth-serving nonprofits by 2020.

Following the summit, Groupon committed to the US2020 initiative with a goal of engaging Groupon product engineers in bridging the gap between low income students and STEM careers. Throughout 2013, Groupon and the Employee Volunteer Program (EVP)  made great strides in achieving our goal, surpassing our initial goal and engaging 36 employees from Groupon Product and Engineering in 2013.
